The House of Representatives recently announced the latest update to the Draft Bill on Alcoholic Beverages (“2015 Draft Bill”). The 2015 Draft Bill aims to create a more orderly and harmonious society by curtailing the various social disruptions and ills that are caused by the consumption of alcoholic beverages. The 2015 Draft Bill also seeks to raise public awareness regarding the health risks associated with the consumption of alcohol.[1]
A prohibition on the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages was initially proposed by the United Development Party (“PPP”),[2] in an attempt to legislate a total ban on alcoholic-beverage distribution in Indonesia. Currently, Indonesia does not ban the distribution of alcoholic beverages, but limits their importation, production, retail sales, and consumption.[3]
